Who we are

Holy Cross Catholic School was founded by Sisters of Saint Mary of Oregon (SSMO) in 1912 to instruct boys as a boarding school. The building was located on the corner of Hodge and Oberlin. Two years later Archbishop Christie asked the Sisters to teach boys and girls in the North Portland area near the University of Portland. Holy Cross Parish and Church grew and the current school building has served children in grades 1st through 8th since 1963. In the year 2000 kindergarten was added so we now serve grades K-8.

Our school is open to all denominations and all children who have a desire to learn and work hard to be their best.

Mass is held on Wednesday of each week, the teachers plan the liturgy with their classes. Fr. John Wironen is our pastor and he works closely with the teachers and musicians to make this weekly event meaningful for all.. He is also available to teachers to enhance religion classes as they request him to do so.

We have study hall for the middle school student on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for one hour after school. The Home Room teachers in Grades 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th are available to the students to give them special assistance. Students in Grade 5-8 have Math at the same time to cross group according to ability and achievement. This is the second year for this program and it has allowed many of our students to move ahead and time is given to those who need more time to develop the necessary skills in order to be successful in algebra and higher math.
